Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has directed the immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak at Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, affected several hostels and classrooms within the school premises.
He issued the directive shortly after personally supervising emergency response efforts at the scene.
He emphasised that the investigating committee should thoroughly examine the root causes of the incident and recommend appropriate measures to prevent any recurrence in the state schools.
The governor was on his way to break his Ramadan fast when he noticed thick smoke along the roadside and promptly instructed his convoy to stop and ascertain the source of the smoke.
A total of 140 students were safely moved out of the premises while the fire service and other emergency responders contained the raging fire.
The governor said the fire incident was unfortunate, saying the gas cylinders in some of the students’ rooms contributed to the intensity of the fire, which the firefighters battled for approximately three to four hours before bringing it under control.
