Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has called on Nigerian football fans to support the senior national team, the Super Eagles, as they kick off their AFCON campaign in Morocco.

Speaking during the opening match of the 2025 Governor’s Cup at the Lafia Township Stadium, Governor Sule urged Nigerians to rally behind the team and provide all necessary support for them to win the tournament.

Sule also praised the initiators of the Governor’s Cup, saying it would strengthen relationships between local government areas and provide opportunities for local players to be scouted by professional teams.

“The AFCON will kick-start today (Sunday) in Morocco and Nigeria will play its first game on Tuesday against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania.

“I will encourage our Eagles and our national team to do the best we can to see that we are no longer runners-up but the champions of Africa,” he said.

Safiyanu Isa Andaha who is the Chairman of Akwanga Local Government and State ALGON Chairman, commended the Nasarawa State Football Association chairman and officials for organizing the Governor’s Cup.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Andaha said the event was a testament to Governor Sule’s commitment to unity and progress in the state.

On his part, the State Football Association Chairman, Salisu Galadima, expressed optimism that the competition would promote football development in the state and thanked God for the peaceful conduct of the event so far.

The tournament features teams from the 13 local government areas.

In the opening match of the tournament, Keana defeated Akwanga 2-1.
