Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has expressed concern over the activities of some politicians whose actions, he said, are generating tension in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, during a bi-monthly media briefing in Lafia on Tuesday, the governor warned that open political campaigns were still prohibited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ahemba said the administration views the ongoing premature campaign activities by some politicians as worrisome, noting that INEC has yet to lift the ban on electioneering.

“The government will not hesitate to support INEC in enforcing its regulations against anyone who goes contrary to the rules of the game,” Ahemba stated.

He added that the state government was concerned that the actions of some politicians appeared to be a deliberate attempt to destabilise the system and create unnecessary tension within the political space.

Ahemba advised political actors to restrict themselves to private consultations, which are permitted under the law, rather than engage in open campaigning.

“Consultations are allowed. If you have any intention to contest for any position, you’re free to consult. But there should be no open campaign at the moment because the ban on political campaigns remains in place,” he said.

He further disclosed that the government had already taken disciplinary action against one of the governor’s senior special assistants for allegedly engaging in open campaign activities.

The immediate past chairman of Doma Local Government, Architect Ahmed Sarki Usman, was relieved of his duties as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Works, Housing and Transport on October 7 for allegedly campaigning for former Inspector General of Police Abubakar Adamu, who is expected to contest the Nasarawa governorship in 2027.
