Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Monday inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, restoring the centuries-old traditional structure with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as chairman.
The inauguration, held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, followed the signing of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which nullified the five additional emirates created by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the new council includes the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye and Rano as members, returning the emirate system to its historic configuration.
Governor Yusuf said the reconstitution of the council was part of his administration’s resolve to strengthen the traditional institution and reposition it as a partner in governance, peacebuilding, and grassroots development.

“The inauguration of the Council of Emirs today is the reaffirmation of our administration’s commitment to preserve Kano’s cultural legacy, strengthen good governance, and deepen the partnership between the Government and the Emirates,” he said.
He added that the council was envisioned to serve as a central forum where royal fathers would regularly deliberate and offer guidance on matters affecting the well-being of citizens.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo said the council’s revival would enhance the role of traditional authority in the state’s development process.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs, Professor Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, delivered a presentation on the historical evolution of the emirate system. He said the governor’s action had restored a 700-year-old legacy in which all district heads operated under a unified structure led by the Emir of Kano.
In his remarks, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II described the inauguration as timely and consistent with historical tradition.
Speaking on behalf of the member Emirs, he commended Governor Yusuf for what he called “monumental achievements” across the state and pledged the council’s commitment to supporting the government.
