The wife of the Osun State governor, Sherifat Aregbesola, has expressed the need for proper upbringing of children in the country and eradication of harmful traditional practices against the girl child.
Speaking at the 7th special meeting of the Southern Governors’ Wives Forum (SGWF) in Osogbo, Osun state capital, Aregbesola said necessary steps must be taken to guide and guard the children, particularly the girls to have proper growth and become great in the future.
She donated tools including grinding machines, sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, and cassava processing machines to some women to empower them to be self sustained.
She said: “In addition to our empowerment programs, quite a number of issues may demand more of our attention as the years go by. One of these is the need for us to step up the tempo of sensitization in our states for proper parental upbringing of children."
“I am of the opinion that this will stem the challenge of public misbehavior which often leads to insecurity. My darling sisters, I would like our forum to also consider intensifying our advocacy on the eradication of harmful traditional practices and dangers that threaten our girls."
“These range from issues of unsafe abortion, female genital mutilation, drug abuse, rape, sexual harassment in schools and child marriages. Our intensified efforts in these directions will help millions of girls to have proper growth and become great mothers."
In their separate remarks, Mrs Edith Okowa; the wife of Delta State governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode; the wife of Lagos State governor and Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi; the wife of Enugu State governor admonished women on healthy sexual life, economic reliance and their roles as wives.
Others in attendance were: Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu; wife of Abia State governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel, wife of Akwa Ibom State governor, Mrs. Bene Obaseki; wife of Edo State governor, Mrs. Feyisetan Fayose; wife of Ekiti State governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun; wife of Ogun State governor and Mrs. Florence Ajimobi; wife of Oyo State governor.
