Governorship candidates of political parties in Benue State have signed a peace pact to conduct themselves orderly in this Saturday’s elections.

Our correspondent reports that the peace pact was signed during a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2023 governorship and House of Assembly elections organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Makurdi yesterday.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof Samuel Egwu, while speaking to the participants, who included political party leaders, candidates, security agencies and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), noted that the meeting was to dialogue on a peaceful process for Saturday’s elections.

Egwu assured that all noticeable lapses during the previous elections had been corrected and everything put in place to avoid a repeat.

Speaking shortly after the pact, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rev Father Hyacinth Alia, said, “Benue is the only state we have as home and we can’t settle for less or do things that can divide us. I have experience on smear campaign, but I know that when a fruit is ripe, it becomes an object of target. I am ripe. I am seeking leadership to uplift my state.”

Similarly, the governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Roseline Ada Chenge, said, “As a woman, I stand for peace and I will make sure that peace reigns in Benue.”
