The Senate on Thursday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 in conducting the March 11 governorship and state assembly elections.

Senate President Ahmed Lawan stated this shortly before adjourning plenary till March 14 to allow lawmakers participate in the elections.

He urged INEC to address all issues raised by Nigerians during last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections for successful conduct of the coming polls.

Lawan said, “INEC should consider looking into issues raised by the public. INEC should be strictly guided by the Constitution and the Electoral Act and their guidelines and regulations.

“Nigerians should support INEC in whatever way they can so that it conducts the governorship and states assembly elections successfully.

“This is because that is what we all expect and that is what we need as a democracy.”

Daily Trust reports that seven serving senators are contesting in the governorship election.

Lawan wished them success, saying Senator Aishatu Binani (APC, Adamawa) would make history if elected to be the first Nigerian female governor.
