The Sokoto State government has approved about N13 billion for the construction of township roads and the installation of solar-powered street lights.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the Commissioner of Water Resources, Yusuf Maccido, noted that N8.9bn was for the construction of 47 roads at the metropolitan areas of Tudun-Wada and Unguwan Rogo.

According to Maccido, part of the money would be used to compensate the affected residents. The Commissioner of Lands and Housing, Barrister Nasiru Dantsoho, said N2.9bn was for the rehabilitation of Runjin, Sambo township roads and Bodinga Road respectively. Similarly, the sum of N488.7m was earmarked for landscaping of Forces Avenue and Lodge Roads.

The Commissioner of Information, Sambo Danchadi, said that N1.797bn had been approved for the installation of solar-powered street lights along 44 major roads in the state’s metropolis. The Commissioner of Youth and Sport, Jamilu Umar Gusts, however said that the sum of N1.1bn was approved for the purchase of six vehicles for the governor’s convoy.

Meanwhile, the state government has vacated the revocation order of Gidan Salanke Housing Estate by the immediate past government. Announcing the decision, Barrister Dantsoho said that this followed the resolution of the impasse between the state government and the contractor.
