‘Govt offices, hotels, schools owing NIPOST’

The Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) in Plateau State said yesterday that some federal parastatals, hotels and schools operating private mail boxes are defaulting in payments.
The Area Postal Manager (NIPOST) Plateau Territory, Mrs. Danso Olayinka, who spoke at a NIPOST Key Customers Forum on implementation of Stamp Act in Jos, said the agency’s biggest customers incurred huge debts.
“We observed that some federal organizations/parastatals, schools, hotels who have private boxes (PMBs) in our post offices are defaulting in their payments. It is pertinent to pay up our outstanding rents and debts so that you can continue to have unfettered access to these services,” she said.
Mrs. Danso said NIPOST was facing problems with compliance with the Stamp Duty Act by the general public.
“The purpose of the interactive forum is to enlighten the business community in Plateau on the implementation of the Stamp Duty Act with a view to achieving total compliance. The crux of our discussion is basically to remind ourselves as partners on the existing law of the Federation of Nigeria Vo. 14 on Stamp Duty Act 2004. The Stamp Duty Act is an act of government requiring every citizen to affix postage stamp to every document/receipt that may require authentication. All educational institutions, hotels, financial houses, rent collectors and agencies are by law compelled to affix postage stamps to denote payment of duty,” he said.
