The chairman of FCT wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Stephen Knabayi, has urged government not to toy with teachers’ welfare as doing so could affect the education of their students. 

Knabayi said the union leadership under his watch is interested in dialogue while pressing for teachers’ welfare and not antagonism.

Speaking during an interview yesterday in Gwagwalada, Knabayi said should dialogue fail, the union has other ways to demand for what belongs to the teachers.

According to him, any demand for teachers, such arrears, promotion and other welfare packages are not a privilege, but a right which government should always prioritise to encourage teachers in the discharge of their work.

“Going by NUT constitution, it permits the union executives to represent the teachers both in LEA, junior secondary schools and senior secondary schools in FCT as well as teachers in quality assurance in terms of their demands,” he said.
