Governments at all level have been urged to create conducive environment and for workers to operate to check the menace of brain drain bedeviling the nation’s workforce.

This advice was given by  Mr  Theo Adejor, Deputy Director Human Capital Management Department of  Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) at  the Chartered Institute of Personel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), Abuja branch annual   public lecture with the theme, “ Retaining skilled employees in an economy prone to brain drain.”

Adejor noted that the country is endowed with core professionals in ICT, finance, engineering among others,  whom after being trained leave for abroad for greener pasture.

“Why do they leave? It is because of the economic situation and political instability. If things can be managed better, these professionals want to stay here. They should be given better condition of service, if not; they will prefer to go to where they will be appreciated more. Scientists, engineers and even our sportsmen are now featuring for other countries just because  the conditions are not satisfactory here.”

He said that vocational skill centres can be used in a lot of ways apart from being used to train artisans, saying “the NYSC should be changed to focus more on vocational training for corp members so that by the time they come out of service they have something that they can do rather than to sit down idly looking out for white collar jobs.”
