Govt. urged to establish counseling desk in secondary schools

Kano state government has been urged to establish guidance and counseling desk in all public secondary school in the state with a view to guiding students in their future carrier.

The Deputy Director Guidance and Counseling, Kano Educational Resource Department (KERD), Hajiya Faiza Imam made the call at a workshop on Girls Opportunity for Advancing Literacy (GOAL2), project organized by Mercy Corps in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation.

She said lack of proper guidance and counseling for the secondary school students led them to end up having wrong choice of course at tertiary level or sometimes, fail to get the admission for having wrong subjects’ combination.

“The schools have to orient the students in terms of career paths. Teachers should give them words of encouragement and the schools should bring experienced people to share their stories in order to encourage the students,” she said.

Earlier in her speech, the GOAL2 Programme Manager, Esther Musa said that the Mercy Corps through the GOAL2 project, has trained 820 teachers counselors and gave them practical instruction guide and the subject combination guide book to enable them function efficiently.

Esther added that the project also supported KERD to form a state guidance and counseling advisory committee with the aim of leading on the issues of guidance and counseling in the state and ensuring professionalism.
