Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; renowned industrialist, Oba Otudeko and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, together with three other eminent Nigerians are to bag Doctorate Degrees (Honoris Causa) from the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo at the institution’s 8th Convocation ceremony coming up next Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dapo Asaju has announced.

The three others are Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Oladipo Akinkugbe; Executive Vice Chairman of Famfa Oil Limited, Chief (Mrs.) Folorunsho Alakija and a retired Chief Judge of Kwara State, Hon. Justice Oyeyipo.

Unfolding this in Oyo town on Tuesday at a press conference heralding the Convocation ceremonies, the Vice-Chancellor remarked that the Honorary Doctorate degrees are being awarded these distinguished Nigerians in consideration of their indelible contributions to the nation and humanities, individually and collectively.

The Vice Chancellor told newsmen that a total of 319 students will be admitted into their first degrees at the occasion explaining that 16 of these students are graduating in First Class honours, 66 in Second Class Upper divisions, 126 in second Class Lower divisions and 111 in third Class divisions.

Among the graduating students, according to the Vice-Chancellor are some candidates including Mr. Kunle Adepoju who took part in National and global competitions and performed notably well particularly at the Unilever Idea Trophy contest held in London, United Kingdom, where the national team emerged 4th position in the world.

Also at the Microsoft Imaging Cup, a national competition organized by Microsoft Corporation, five students of Computer Science from Ajayi Crowther University, two among those graduating this year took part in the competition and came 3rd in Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor further remarked.

While noting that the Council of Legal Education had formally approved the Law Degree programme of the University, thus complementing the earlier approval by the National University Commission (NUC) for the take off of the programme, Professor Asaju submitted that "the Law Degree programme has become the hub of this University and we intend to grow it to become one of the best in Nigeria and the world at large."
