A graduate of mechanical engineering from the Federal University of Science and Technology, Minna (FUTMinna), Mark Audu, on Wednesday, pleaded for leniency from the correctional centre in Okene, Kogi State.

In an encounter with the acting Chief Judge (CJ), Justice Joshia Majebi, who was on a tour to the centre as part of a decongestion programme, Audu, from Ajaokuta in Kogi State, said he was at peace with himself whenever he smoked Indian hemp.

He told Justice Majebi that, “When I smoke weed, it makes me sleep peacefully,” pledging that he would not smoke hemp again if pardoned.

City & Crime learnt that Audu was remanded at the centre on September 19, 2022, over crimes of intimidation, mischief and theft by an Obagede magistrates’ court in Okehi LGA.

Justice Majebi ordered the court to accord him accelerated hearing, even as he urged operatives of the centre to liaise with his mother who reported him for a better solution to ease him out of the hemp addiction.

Justice Majebi also instructed the police prosecutor to facilitate a mental health examination of an inmate, Mustapha Shaibu, who killed his mother and his brother.

Meanwhile, Justice Majebi ordered the release of Yusuf Usman who was charged with theft and intimidation on bail, while ordering the case of 16-year-old Yahaya Salawu on the same offences to be transferred to a family court.
