The situation has made it compulsory for all graduates to acquire skills before leaving the precinct of their institutions, the lawmaker said.
Ahmad who is Chairman, House Committee on Justice spoke at the weekend while commissioning the vocational centre of University of Ilorin Students’ Union which he equipped.
The centre has sections dealing with different vocations including tailoring, hair-dressing/barbing salon; shoe making and bag making.
The Reps member who regretted the high unemployment rate in the country said his intervention was targeted at preparing the youth for future challenges.
He advised against reducing education to a meal ticket, saying education should take care of man’s day-to-day living.
“If we reduce education to a meal ticket, you are not doing a good service for yourself. Once you gather education, you have prepared yourself for life but your life is one thing and living day-to-day is another,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali who was represented by Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Abayomi Omotesho, noted that it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure jobs in the country, stressing that acquisition of skills would make the students survive the harsh employment market.
The students’ union president, Comrade Ahmed Ishowo, said the centre was aimed at tackling youth unemployment, promising that graduates of the facility would be empowered with start-up capital.
