A groom in Algeria is taking his new wife to court, claiming he was left traumatized after seeing her without makeup for the first time.
Emirates 247 reported that the man is looking for $20,000 ( about N4 million) in damages.
The unnamed couple had just gotten married, and after their first night together the husband was so shocked to see his bare-faced wife that he decided to file a lawsuit against her. The man allegedly claimed that his wife was a “thief,” telling a court that he suffered “psychological suffering” from having to see her face without makeup.
“He said he was deceived by her as she used to fill up her face with make up before their marriage,” a source told Emirates 247.
“He said she looked very beautiful and attractive before marriage, but when he woke up in the morning and found that she had washed the make-up off her face, he was frightened as he thought she was a thief.”
This is not the first case of wedding-day legal issues. In India, a bride who was about to marry a man arranged by her family decided to test the man’s intelligence with an impromptu math quiz. She asked the man what is 15 plus six.He answered 17, and the angry bride abruptly left the ceremony.
The woman’s family defended the decision.
“Any class one student must be able to solve the simple problem asked by us. The family of the groom had kept us in dark about the youth’s qualification,” said Mohar Singh, the bride’s father, in an interview with the Times of India. “It was a very embarrassing situation for all of us as we had come with all preparations and it was a matter of social prestige as well. We have been cheated.”
The Los Angeles Times noted that many families in areas with arranged marriages go so far as to hire private investigators who look into the health and the financial situation for a spouse before the arranged marriage goes through.
