It comes amidst concerns that nets meant to keep away mosquitoes are converted into curtains, dresses, sieves for filtering water and fishing nets.
The campaign targets some 230 communities for six months, after Amsag, a development and public health group, was selected to work with the National Malaria Elimination Programme and the federal health ministry.
Much of its advocacy will target schools, alongside dialogue with communities and a sponsored phone-in programme Gari Ya Waye (“Good Morning, Sokoto State”).
The programme’s mission to meet residents in the 230 communities is to ensure they “become properly enlightened on how to use the long-lasting insecticide nets,” according to Dr Abdullahi Maiwada, principal consultant for Amsag.
Community dialogue in its first six-month phase has already drawn “encouraging” participation among women attending antenatal clinic, madrasahs and in their homes, said a team member who fostered a recent meeting.
But the group has also sought support from the state government, the Sultan of Sokoto as well as Sokoto’s ministries of health and women affairs to help reach community residents.
