A group, Arewa Community in Lagos has declared its support for the planned relocation of the popular Mile 12 market from its currentlocation to a new place.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, had after the recent violent crisis that rocked the market unfolded plans by the government to relocate the market to Imota, an outskirt of Ikorodu in Lagos.
The group’s secretary, Alhaji Musa Saleh,a t a press conference in Lagos, maintained that the move by the state government was in the best interest of the market.
“The development of the new ultra-modern market at Imota followed our request to the Lagos State government to develop a befitting ultra-modern market of international standard for agricultural products and would be fully supported.
“We face a lot of hardship in our various markets which principally is as a result of space constraint. And this is a major problem of Mile 12 market which had led to so many crises in the past. We cannot continue in that way,” Saleh said.
The group said the statement credited to former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, during his recent visit to Lagos and his admonition to Governor Ambode not to relocate the market was based on misinformation.
“Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has been misinformed by the leadership of the Mile 12 market led by Alhaji Haruna Mohammed who is presently
enmeshed in leadership crisis in the market, whose primary concern is holding on to the leadership of the market to the detriment of the generality of the people of Lagos State including the Arewa Community, thereby preventing us of the benefit of having a befitting ultra-modern market of International Standard.
“We wish to categorically state without any fear of equivocation that we are 100% in support of the relocation of Mile 12 Market to the new Ultra-modern Agricultural Market at Imota presently being developed by the Lagos State government and we are ready to move to the new market as soon as possible,” Saleh said.
