Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA) on Thursday night broke their fast with Muslim inmates of the Oke-Kura prison located in the heart of the Kwara state capital Ilorin.
The gesture according to the Public Relations Officer of the association, Mal. Uthman Jagunmo was to give the inmates sense of belonging and contribute their token for the support of the prison.
He said they have been indulging in the act of feeding the inmates for the past three years and usually set a day aside to have iftar (break of fast) with them.
“We started three years ago by feeding Muslims among the prisoners throughout the month of Ramadan and we also decided to meet and dine with them one day out of the 30 days so that they can feel loved.
“We don’t only feed them but we engage in other social responsibility to help the inmates of the prison. Sometimes in the past we dug borehole for them to tackle the issue of water scarcity among others,” Jagunmo said.
Jagunmo therefore appealed to well to do individuals in the society to support the prison saying there a lot of needs by the prisoners which government alone cannot provide.
Deputy Comptroller prisons, Mr Yinka Oyun appreciated the group and call on Nigerians to always support the prison service.
“I want to thank you for the support because people’ visit to the prison usually change the inmates perceptions. Our job requires more support from people in the society because the job is tasking,” he said.
Highlight of the visit was the recitation of the Holy Quranic by one of the inmates.
Members of the group broke their fast with some inmates who attended the gathering at the prison.
