Connected Development (CODE) Tuesday joined others in Nigeria to mark this year’s Children’s Day with focus on Nigeria’s 20 million out-of-school children and ways to improve access to education.
The event, themed “Little Footstep, Big Future: Enhancing the Total Wellbeing of Children through Quality Education and Skill,” brought together students from Kubwa Secondary School and Kuchigoro Junior Secondary School.
CODE’s Chief Executive Officer, Hamzat Lawal, called the out-of-school figure ‘unacceptable’ and urged collective action from parents, teachers, religious leaders and the community.
“There is no future for a country that refuses to invest in its children,” he said.

Yusuf Madaki, a teacher from Kuchigoro Secondary School, said, “Some parents don’t have the means or knowledge to prioritise education, but the government can intervene and help in such situations.”
Esther Ezeifeka, a student from Kubwa Secondary School, said, “The government should make basic education free so that those that can’t afford it can go to school and improve their lives.”
