The Zamfara Democracy Monitoring Group (ZDMG) has expressed concern over the level of security deployment across Zamfara State ahead of the forthcoming rerun elections.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Lawali Hassan, the group acknowledged the posting of a high-ranking Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) from Force Headquarters, along with units from Kaduna, Zaria, Sokoto, and Gombe.

Hassan noted that the presence of personnel from various police formations, including the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) and Mobile Police (MOPOL) units, as well as reports of military involvement in previous elections, underscores the scale of security mobilization for the polls.

According to him, while security is essential for peaceful elections, the deployment of large numbers of personnel can also heighten public apprehension.

He stressed that Zamfara’s long history of insecurity requires a delicate balance between safety and trust-building, urging that electoral processes should remain civilian-led and people-centered.

“The right to vote is sacrosanct and must be exercised freely by all citizens,” Hassan said, adding that confidence in the democratic process depends on neutrality, transparency, and fairness.

The group appealed to the authorities to manage security deployment in a way that builds public trust and ensures a peaceful atmosphere during the elections. It also called on civil society organizations, political parties, and the international community to support efforts that guarantee credible polls.

“The ZDMG remains committed to monitoring the situation closely and will continue to encourage citizens to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and steadfast in their democratic responsibilities,” Hassan added.
