The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has expressed concern over recent political tensions in Kebbi State, following a petition filed on September 10, 2023.

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group cautioned that unverified claims and counterclaims could threaten the peace and stability of the state, urging all stakeholders to act responsibly.

Bamidele said: “The Democracy Watch Initiative believes that Kebbi State must remain a beacon of peace and communal harmony. Any allegations that have the potential to incite fear or unrest among citizens should be handled with caution and due process.”

He noted that DWI recognizes the Senate, the National Assembly, and relevant security agencies as the proper authorities to investigate and address issues relating to peace and security in the state.

“It is imperative that all political actors exercise restraint and prioritize the unity and progress of Kebbi State. The people deserve leaders who place peace, stability, and the rule of law above personal or political interests,” the statement added.

The group reaffirmed its solidarity with the citizens of Kebbi, pledging to continue advocating for a political environment free from violence, intimidation, and misinformation.

“In conclusion, Democracy Watch Initiative calls on all stakeholders to work together in safeguarding the peace of Kebbi State. The voices of the people must be respected, and democratic institutions must be protected,” Bamidele said.
