A group under the Advocacy for Integrity ànd Rule of Law (AIRL) has called on the Nigeria Senate to exercise restraints and tread with caution over the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi.

The group said if the Senate failed to manage the matter it may degenerate and bring the image and integrity of the upper chamber into disrepute.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the group, Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa on Friday said the purported suspension of the Senate would amount to denying her constituency their right to representation.

The group urged the Senate to be alive to its responsibilities in making laws for ordinary Nigerians and put an end to the show of shame going on the floor of the Senate.

The statement read: “Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan’s face off on the floor of the Senate and on  social media.

“We, as nonpartisan observers and advocates of integrity and rule of law, view the confrontation with dismay  as it is capable of bringing the hollow chamber to ridicule and discredit.

“Suspending Senator Natasha would amount to denying her constituency their right to representation. Nigerians see the recent and ugly scenario that took place in the hollow chamber of the Senate, which led to opening cans of worms in the media, both local and international as dancing naked In the marketplace by one of the three Arms of Government.

“We hereby call on the Senate  to live up to expectations of keeping the  nation together, rather than derailing from their primary responsibility  of law making.

“Nigerians would not forgive the Tenth Senate if it continues this ugly scenario that may lead to  trancating our hard earned democracy. We call on our distinguished Senators to look inward and remember that they are not ordinary citizens but are elected as representatives”
