Speaking at a press conference in Kano, CITAD programme officer, Abdulganiyyu Rufai said in the survey they conducted in February this year, 90 per cent of posts by Nigerians from across the country on facebook, twitter and other social media platforms, contained dangerous and hate speeches.
“The speeches captured suggest that the posts if not handled could lead to outbreak of violence in the society similar to the unfortunate crisis after the 2011 elections,” he warned.
The group also chided the persistent death wish campaign by Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, critisizing him over reckless comments by the director of media and publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO) Femi Fani-Kayode.
Rufai called on people using the social media to remain calm and not be provoked by the speeches. He also called on political parties to caution and restrain their members and supporters from making hate speech as they campaign.
