A non-governmental organization (NGO), Caring Hands International, has charged government at all levels to give priority to the plight of the elderly in the country.
The Executive Director of the organisation, Mrs. Fehintola Obilomo, gave the advice in Osogbo, Osun State recently at a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the NGO.
She appealed to government to create geriatric wards in all state and federal health facilities in order to minimize the difficulties that the elderly usually experience in accessing medical care.
Lamenting the difficulties that retirees usually experienced in accessing their pensions and gratuities, Obilomo urged the government to redesign the “I’m Alive” screening exercise in such a way that the elderly would not suffer before they could be screened and cleared.
She also expressed regrets over the neglect of the elderly in Nigeria and urged individuals and governments at all levels to give the senior citizens priority attention.
