The APC Progressive Mandate Group has called for the suspension of ongoing impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing concerns over due process and the potential impact on political stability in the state.

In a statement signed by its convener, Comrade Ayodele Alonge, the group expressed the view that the impeachment move may heighten tensions in Rivers State and undermine recent reconciliation efforts.

According to the group, the process, which was initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly, raises constitutional and procedural questions that require careful consideration to avoid further political uncertainty.

“The impeachment proceedings, as currently constituted, raise serious concerns about constitutional compliance and procedural propriety. Given the sensitive political context of Rivers State, we believe caution is necessary to preserve stability and continuity of governance,” the statement said.

The group noted that President Bola Tinubu had previously intervened to mediate political tensions in the state, leading to a reconciliation process involving Governor Fubara, Minister Nyesom Wike, and the State House of Assembly.

“President Tinubu’s intervention helped ease tensions that had threatened governance in Rivers State. Any action capable of reopening old divisions should be approached with restraint and broad consultation,” the statement added.

The Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier cited allegations relating to budgetary implementation, administrative decisions, and compliance with judicial pronouncements as grounds for the impeachment move.

The group, however, argued that such issues should be addressed through dialogue and established legal mechanisms.
The APC Progressive Mandate Group also referenced Governor Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that it had contributed to political realignments within the state and strengthened the party’s presence.

“Governor Fubara’s political decisions have altered the landscape in Rivers State and encouraged wider participation in the APC. These developments underscore the need for inclusive engagement rather than actions that could deepen divisions,” Alonge said.

While acknowledging differing political interests within the state, the group urged all stakeholders to prioritise peace, constitutional order, and democratic norms.

“We appeal to the National Assembly and relevant institutions to encourage dialogue and ensure that all actions taken in Rivers State strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and democratic principles,” the statement said.

The group concluded by calling for a pause in the impeachment process to allow for broader consultations in the interest of political stability and effective governance.
