The Joint Action Movement of Nigeria (JAMN) has expressed shock and disbelief over the recent arrest of Bauchi state Accountant General, Sirajo Jaja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

The movement also expressed concern over the manner of arrest which was carried out while the Accountant General was attending the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting, an official duty that led to an unexpected interruption by the anti-corruption agency.

This was contained in a statement by Kabiru Ibrahim Turaki, Spokesman of JAMN.

The statement reads: “This unexpected turn of events not only raises serious questions about the integrity of the processes involved but also the attempt to cast a shadow over the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed, as the EFCC has claimed an investigation into his alleged involvement in fraudulent activities.

“The EFCC’s claims of investigating Governor Bala Mohammed’s alleged involvement in fraudulent activities further complicate the situation. The timing of these allegations raises questions about the motives behind the investigation.

“Such actions could be politically motivated, aimed at undermining the credibility of the current administration. In a nation where political rivalries often manifest through legal and investigative means, this scenario is not uncommon. The implications of these allegations could be far-reaching, affecting not only the reputation of the individuals involved but also the trust of the public in the governing institutions.

“Moreover, the arrest of Jaja and the subsequent allegations against Governor Mohammed may have a chilling effect on public service and governance in Bauchi State. Public officials may become increasingly wary of performing their duties, fearing that their actions could be subject to scrutiny or misinterpretation as corrupt practices.

“This could lead to a paralysis of governance, where officials hesitate to make decisions for the good of the public, ultimately hindering development and progress within the state.”

Furthermore, JAMN advocated for the establishment of mechanisms to protect public officials who act in good faith.

“Safeguards are necessary to ensure that individuals such as Governor Mohammed who are committed to transparency and ethical governance are not unjustly targeted or vilified. The integrity of public service is paramount, and it is essential that those who serve the public can do so without fear of retribution for their actions.

“We are particularly concerned about the manner in which this arrest was executed. Sirajo Jaja was attending the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting—an official duty crucial to the financial governance of our state—when he was abruptly interrupted by the EFCC. This approach is not only disruptive but also raises ethical questions about the agency’s methods and intentions. Such actions could have been avoided had the EFCC opted for a more professional and respectful approach, allowing the Accountant General to fulfill his official responsibilities while addressing any inquiries at a later time.

“The conduct of the EFCC in this matter is deeply troubling. The sensationalism and politicization surrounding the arrest, coupled with the media trial of a public servant, have given rise to a narrative that many Nigerians perceive as an unacceptable political witch-hunt rather than a genuine effort to combat corruption. It is imperative to recognize that the integrity of our institutions hinges on their ability to conduct investigations without bias and in a manner that upholds the dignity of individuals involved.

“Moreover, the ramifications of this investigation have already led to significant developments, including the removal of the immediate former Accountant General and several permanent secretaries. While we acknowledge the importance of accountability in public service, we must also ensure that such actions are grounded in transparency and fairness, rather than driven by political motives.

“As stakeholders in the governance of Bauchi State, we urge the EFCC to reconsider its approach and to conduct its investigations with the utmost professionalism and respect for due process. We call upon the Commission to ensure that its actions do not undermine public trust in the fight against corruption. It is crucial that all investigations be conducted impartially, allowing for due diligence and fair treatment of all individuals involved.

“As the situation unfolds, it is imperative that all stakeholders prioritize justice and accountability, ensuring that the governance of Bauchi State remains focused on serving the interests of its citizens. JAMN stands firmly against corruption in all its forms, but we equally stand for justice, fairness, and the dignity of public servants. We call on the EFCC to act responsibly and to prioritize the integrity of its operations over sensationalism and political expediency.”
