Group faults US senator’s genocide against Christians’ claim

The Arewa Think Tank has condemned United States Senator Ted Cruz for alleging a systematic genocide against Christians in Nigeria, describing his comments as false, reckless and divisive.

In a statement signed by its convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the group noted that Senator Cruz’s claim was “a dangerous and deliberate falsehood designed to poison our national unity and undermine our sovereignty.”

Yakubu noted that terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP had attacked Nigerians of all faiths, adding that “bandits slaughter Muslims and Christians alike.” He said Cruz’s remarks distorted Nigeria’s complex security realities and were driven by “foreign political games, not truth.”

The group commended the National Assembly for rejecting the US senator’s comments, and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain focused on securing the country.

“We echo the Presidency’s clear statement that terrorism respects no religion. Nigeria is not a pawn in anyone’s political theatre,” the statement noted.

Arewa Think Tank also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage US authorities and demand an end to what it described as “irresponsible commentary” on Nigeria’s internal affairs.

He said, “Nigeria’s resilience is forged in the fire of our diversity. We will not be broken by lies. We remain focused on a secure, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria for all.”
