The Movement of Northeast Youth Organisation Forum has commended the federal government’s resolution to register all social media providers operating within Nigeria’s space.

The group’s leader, Abdurrahman Buba Kwaccham, while addressing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, also supported the ongoing ban on the micro-blogging and social networking service, Twitter, pending when the firm would comply with the Nigerian rules on security issues.

While citing France’s recent fining of Google $267 million, the group accused the internet platforms of taking African nations for granted.

“There was a time the telecommunication system was entirely shut down in the three northeastern states under state of emergency for six months, over the then government’s strategy to provide security there, which has paid back.

“I wonder when I hear some people now commenting on this ban as a violation of freedom of speech even when the issue in question threatens the nation’s security,” he said.
