In the bid to empower children and to ensure that they work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Arigatou International, has launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Academy in Nigeria.
The SDGs Academy which has physical and virtual space for children to learn about the SDGs is in collaboration with the Relief for Children International.
Speaking at the launch of the pilot project at the Cor Marie College in Abuja, the Project Coordinator, Dr Emmanuel Nkanta, said the project is aimed at ending child poverty and it is targeted at all students in both public and private schools.
“For now what we have is the SDGs Academy on wheels because we are going from one school to another and then we have a programme in the future where we bring all these children together,” he said.
Nkanta also revealed that the project would create a walk-in SDGs Academy that would enlighten the public, especially children in order to groom them as actors of the SDGs. He said the best time to instil the culture of peace into the lives of the children is during their formative stage.
“By the time they get to higher institutions, it will be on them to ensure that the SDGs are spread out,” said Nkanta.
Further explaining, the coordinator stated that the academy itself does not just start and end now as members will follow the children gradually into that stage. It will make it easy to have a network of students who are working to achieve the SDGs especially at a time like this in Nigeria because one of the SDGs, goal 16 talks about peace.
“Our country needs it like never before and this is the best time to inculcate the ideals into children,” Nkanta concluded.
