A group, Society for Youth and the Downtrodden (SYD), has commenced registration of the less privileged and physically challenged residents in Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.

SDY Coordinator, Charles Mbalisi, said similar registration had commenced in Benue, Enugu, Bauchi and Imo states at the instance of the group in its bid to ensure better living standard for the downtrodden.

“We have in the past commissioned this registration in several parts of the country. Today is the turn of Karu Local Government Area,” he said, adding that the registration would aid proper planning and implementation of the group’s empowerment and enlightenment programmes.

Mbalisi said the register would also be given to the Social Investment Programme (SIP) of the presidency to aid its planning, especially the disbursement of recovered loot to the poor.

“After the registration, we will forward the names of the people to the SIP office which has the mandate to take care of these downtrodden people. We think this is the class of people that should benefit from recovered loot to be shared to the poor,” he said.

Secretary of People Living with Disabilities (PLWD), Mararaba chapter, Jubril Yusuf, commended the group for the move and appealed to government to complement the effort by ensuring they benefited from the recovered loot.

In another development, an NGO, Awakening the Sleeping Giant Leadership Initiative (ASGLI), has called on government to create employment for the teeming youths of the country.

President of ASGLI, Mr. Olisa Uzoewulu, made this known during the NGO’s inaugural ceremony in Abuja.

Mr. Uzoewelu said employment creation in Nigeria needed to have a planned strategy which would be the bedrock on which wealth creation could be sustained.

Uzoewulu urged political parties to help reduce unemployment in Nigeria by being agents of economic, political and social growth.

He added that political parties should collect dues and play complementary role in economic growth and financial independence, stressing that if these were achieved, sanity would be experienced in the leadership pool of the nation.
