Jema’a Emirate Students Association (JESA) has organised a debate competition for the students of the emirate in higher institutions in the country.
Bayero University, Kano (BUK) emerged winners at the first edition of the competition that held at Women’s Multi-Purpose Hall, Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government headquarters of the state with theme, ‘Whistle Blowing Policy in Nigeria as a Tool in Fighting Corruption, A Myth or Reality?’
Speaking with Aso Chronicle after the competition, JESA president, Akilu Ibrahim Musa, said they organized the debate with a leading topic in the country, whistle blowing policy, which is used in fighting corruption, to see how Nigerians, especially those in higher institutions, are conversant with it, and to bring forth ideas that would shape the future of the younger generation.
He said they were sensitizing the youths outside the school to know their role in society after graduation.
“The selection of this topic is deliberate. We want our teaming youths to see how they can contribute to nation building through fighting corruption,” he said
The president, added: “Some of our youths are either not aware of the policy of whistle blowing; how, when and where to blow, or are afraid of what will affect them after the blowing; and secondly, how seriously government is in dealing with people connected with bribery and corruption regardless of their party affiliation,” he added
Among the 10 schools expected to attend for the debate only six participated.
The schools are, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Al-Qalam University, Katsina, Kaduna State College of Education, Kafanchan, Shehu Idris College of Health and Technology, Makarfi, Bayero University, Kano and Federal College of Education, Zaria.
Those that did not attend include Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Kafanchan, Kaduna State University, KASU, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi, among others.
Bayero University, Kano emerged winners of the competition, Shehu Idris College of Health and Science Technology, Makarfi came second and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, emerged third.
Others are Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya-Kafanchan, Federal College of Education, Zaria and Al-Qalam University, Katsina trailed behind as 4th, 5th and 6th positions.
