Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta Muslim Alumni (MAPAMA) has expressed its desire to partner its alma mater in the area of strengthening human capital potential of the students to make them employable.
The President of MAPAMA, Mr. Taofeek Salako, disclosed this at the Employability Seminar organized by the Muslim Alumni held at Ramota Babalakin Hall at the Ojere campus of the school in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said the alumni commenced its employability project with the seminar in a quest to address employability and employment problems rampant among the graduates.
With over 130 participants which comprises of students and members of the alumni in attendance, Salako revealed that the seminar was planned to acquaint the students with requisite skills necessary for securing sustainable jobs and expose them to possible inclination for entrepreneurial opportunities.
Also, the chairman of MAPAMA Education Foundation, Mr. Abdurrazaq Misbahudeen, said the alumni is interested in evolving strategies to curtail the evil effects of unemployment and make the school graduates valuable assets to prospective employers and/or wealth creators.
He added that the group expects those awaiting call up letters for youth service to exhibit prudency with their NYSC allowance and put to use knowledge gained at the seminar to get good job or start any business of their own.
In his presentation, the resource person at the event, Mr. Abdulfattah Okanlawon of Goldfields Professional Services, noted that most students after graduation await government employment and thus waste their time and resources on passive job seeking without quest to seek soft skills and attitude that will make them secure and retain employment over time.
He added: “Jobs are everywhere just that majority have a mindset and orientation that is faulty. Muslims in particular suffers from lack of preparedness in job seeking.
“The manner of dressing and comportment most time disqualified many ever before being questioned at job interviews.
“Going forward, more Muslim organization should embrace investing in this kind of seminar thereby ensuring that better future is created for our younger ones”.
The speaker also addresses topics including workplace readiness, what is employability, effective job search, crafting a winning resume and entrepreneurial skill.
Another speaker at the event, Dr. Koyejo Jolaoso of MAPOLY Architectural department, harps on the students’ need to embrace competence in their field of studies alongside consistency that will ensure their comparative advantage in the stiff competition in the world.
He added that sincerity and honesty as a major ethics in Islam should be their guide to achieve the aspired success.
A senior lecturer in the department of Mass Communication, Dr. Goke Rauf, addresses the participants on the need to build attractive personal brand by forming a niche in the overcrowded market place.
He characterized performance measurement on the quantity, quality and the alignment of the job performed to the expectations of the organization.
