Elders of the Gongola Peoples in Adamawa State have called for transparency and fairness in the selection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the group, represented by Markus Gundiri, emphasised the need for internal democracy and inclusive participation in the party’s primary process.

The elders, who represent ethnic nationalities from the former Gongola region, expressed their preference for a credible and open process that allows all aspirants to compete on equal footing.

“We believe that a transparent and participatory primary process is essential for strengthening the party and ensuring broad-based support,” Gundiri said.

The group reaffirmed its support for the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the broader goals of the APC at the national level, while stressing the importance of aligning such support with democratic principles at the state level.

“Our support for the party is rooted in shared values of fairness, justice, and inclusiveness. These principles should guide the emergence of candidates at all levels,” the statement noted.

They urged party leaders to create a level playing field for all aspirants, noting that a credible process would enhance unity within the party and improve its prospects in the general election.

“All aspirants should have the opportunity to engage party members and delegates freely. A process that reflects the genuine choice of stakeholders will strengthen confidence and cohesion,” the elders said.

The group also encouraged continuous engagement among party stakeholders to promote consensus-building and mutual understanding in the lead-up to the elections.

“We are confident that adherence to democratic norms will foster unity, strengthen the party’s structure, and position it for success,” Gundiri added.

They reiterated their commitment to equity, fairness, and the empowerment of communities, urging political actors to prioritise due process as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
