Miss Ekperuou made this known when she paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Nasiru Yusif Gawuna, in his office, in Kano. She said her team was in Kano to introduce a programme called ‘Lady Mechanic Initiative’, that entails three month’s intensive training on mechanics for women, which has already commenced in some southern states of the federation.
She said the training will assist women, especially women farmers, to get accustomed to repairing their mechanical inputs without much ado.
She revealed that her over 30 years of experience has accorded her the ability to train and empower over 700 women in the trade, which also includes driving lessons, adding that Kano has been selected in the northern region to benefit from the programme considering the numerous policies and programmes initiated by the present administration in the state.
She therefore solicited for collaboration with the state government to train more women in addition to the 20 already enrolled.
In his response, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Nasiru Yusif Gawuna, said the state government would look into the partnership, saying that so far the present administration has trained and empowered over 9,000 youth including women on various agric businesses through the six capacity building institutes established under the ministry.
