The Grassroots Researchers Association with funding from Women’s Peace Humanitarian Fund and technical support from the United Nations Women has trained Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) activists across two local governments in Yobe State.

Mr Samuel Orahi, the programme manager of the initiative, noted the training was aimed at building the capacity of the SGBV activist in Yobe to enable them to take action towards ending violence against women and girls.

Orahi said the training would also expose the participants to promote sexual and reproductive health and right of their community members through strategic advocacy.

He said the participants were selected from Damaturu and Potiskum communities based on their prior experiences.

The facilitator at the training, who is also a Gender-Based Violence instructor, Ruqayya Ibrahim, described Gender-Based Violence as any type of violence or harmful act that is perpetrated on anyone because of his/her gender mostly on women and girls.

She added that the trainees would learn skills and community-based approaches in the prevention and responding to gender-based violence cases so that they can easily sensitise their communities.

One of the participants, Happiness Paul, said the workshop has exposed her to many strategies that would help educate women and girls from her community.
