No fewer than 50 young men and women from different youth organizations have benefitted from a training programme on substance abuse prevention and rehabilitation in Kano, sponsored by Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund.

The programme termed “Reclaiming Futures in Northern Nigeria” was a project put together by some alumni of the United States department of States who themselves have benefitted from an exchange programme in the US.

The team leader of the project, Mr Ejikeme McBishops Ogueji, said the project was to train youth on the dangers of drug abuse and how to prevent it, adding that the menace, if not checked, could surpass that of Boko Haram in the region.

“According to NDLEA, substance abuse is another danger that is going to take over Northern Nigeria after Boko Haram, and that it is going to be more dangerous because people willingly surrender to it and it is sweeping on our youth,” he said

He added that the organizers were beneficiaries of the US department of States exchange programme where they were trained and exchange ideas with other participants on a topic “Substance Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation: A project for Nigeria”.

“So this is our way of reaching back to the society, and we realized that the problem is more in the northern part of the country, that is why we selected four states of Gombe, Kaduna, Kano and Abuja.

On his part, the Media/Outreach coordinator of the project, Mr Tajudeen Suleiman, called on the Nigerian journalists to do more in the sensitization and enlightenment on the dangers of drug abuse.
