The Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria in collaboration with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health has unveiled Sayana Press, a child spacing contraceptive with a view to reducing mother and child mortality.

Speaking at the event in Kaduna, the Deputy Director, Programmes of the organisation, Mrs. Nafisatu Adamu said the main aim of the programme is family planning and child spacing.

She said, “The woman has so many choices to make if she wants to practice family planning, this is why we are here to support the woman to plan her family. Sayana Press is a three month progestin-only all-in-one injectable contraceptive that combines the drug and needle. Sayana Press is small, light, easy to use, and requires minimal training, making it especially suitable for community-based distribution—and for women to administer themselves through self-injection. 

“Sayana Press can improve access to a safe and effective contraceptive option. It is unfortunate that men prevent the women from family panning but if there is understanding between the man and woman, they caN plan their family effectively. Families need to have time for themselves and the only way to have time for themselves is to plan the family.”

She advised married couples to get health providers who will educate and give them the necessary information they need to make a choice on the child spacing method to us. 

Also, the state Chairman of the organisation, Comrade Kabiru Ibrahim said the child spacing contraceptive is being launched in four local government areas of the state including Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Chukun and Igabi local governments. 

He added, “By the grace of God next year we will launch Sayana Press in other local government. We have train about 250 community health extension workers and  if this is accepted by the people we will extend it.”

On his part, the Deputy Director, Primary Health Care, Malam Hamza Ibrahim said the purpose of the training materials is to ensure that participants acquire the knowledge and skills they need to provide Sayana Press to their clients.
