A group of concerned parents and educators has urged the federal government to convey soon a national conference on education which will produce a standard and modern Nigerian curriculum that will improve teaching and learning processes across the country.

The group, Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE) Initiative, noted that the curriculum conference would involve representatives of all professions including doctors, architects, engineers, accountants, parents, teachers, students and policy makers, among other who would gather to give their inputs and discuss how to bring up and educate the Nigerian child.

The Proprietress of Greater Height School in Lagos, Mrs. Ifueko Thomas, who gave the charge at the ‘Save Education in Nigeria Dialogue’ organised by CPE said that a nation is as good as its curriculum.

While speaking on “How to create a curriculum that serves the need of the society,” she said, “We don’t have a Nigerian curriculum; what we have is a list of subjects with no clue. We must have a curriculum that is relevant to our society and worthwhile.”

Also speaking, the founder of CPE, Mrs Yinka Ogunde, stressed the need for a curriculum review conference.

According to her, no one person can change the education sector, hence, the need for all stakeholders to come together to play their role.

She also stressed the need for a high powered education transformation team to be constituted to report only to the Presidency.

“They will not only be talking but designing and getting things done because we have so many policies, but lacks action. We are out to transform Nigeria; all of us can make things work,” she said.

Earlier in her keynote address, the former Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Princess Sarah Sosan, emphasized the significance of education, saying it promotes peace, unity, understanding and respect for one another irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation.

Students from different schools that attended the event said that they will love to learn in a conducive environment, practically with use of technology.
