The Congress of Northern Democrats has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over what it described as the prolonged dominance of established political figures within opposition politics.

The group said opposition parties and political stakeholders should focus more on unity, policy direction and leadership renewal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the group, Comrade Musa Adamu, the CND expressed concern over reports that Atiku may contest the presidency again in 2027.

According to the statement, Nigerians are currently facing economic and security challenges that require opposition leaders to work together around what it described as a clear national agenda.

Adamu said: “At a time when millions of Nigerians are facing hardship, insecurity, unemployment and inflation, the opposition ought to be rallying around a coherent national rescue agenda.

“Many Nigerians are eager to see stronger collaboration among opposition leaders and a renewed focus on solutions that directly address the concerns of citizens.”

The group stated that Atiku has remained a prominent figure in opposition politics for many years and argued that there should be more opportunities for younger politicians and emerging leaders to contribute to national leadership discussions.

“The North, in particular, must reflect on the direction of opposition politics and the kind of leadership approach that can best address the region’s current challenges,” Adamu said.

The CND also said coalition platforms and opposition movements should focus on building broader consensus and presenting a united front capable of offering alternatives on issues affecting Nigerians.

“It is important for younger Nigerians with fresh ideas and grassroots support to be given meaningful opportunities within the political space,” the statement added.

The group further called on political stakeholders, civil society organisations and youths to support issue-based politics centred on competence, integrity and national development.

According to the statement, the North continues to face challenges including insecurity, unemployment and poverty, and requires leadership focused on long-term solutions and inclusive development.
