The North Central Media Forum (NCMF) has issued a rallying call for support for Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), in order for him to carry out his duties unhindered by distractions.

Daily Trust reports that Senator Akume recently drew attention during a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja, where he addressed his financial constraints, notably his inability to pay his four drivers monthly salary of N100,000 each.

While his remarks sparked widespread criticism, particularly from political opponents, the NCMF believes such backlash is unjust and an exaggerated portrayal of his honesty.

In a statement released in Abuja, the forum defended Akume’s integrity, citing his consistent transparency regarding his financial status.

They underscored that Akume, a former Governor of Benue State, solely relied on his pension and salary as the SGF, refraining from engaging in business ventures or corrupt practices to amass wealth.

Abubakar Yakubu, President of NCMF, emphasised that Akume’s modest lifestyle exemplified his integrity, noting his history of prioritising the welfare of his constituents over personal gains.

Yakubu highlighted Akume’s past acts of personal sacrifice, where he utilised his resources to address the needs of the people.

The group condemned the hypocrisy of Akume’s critics, asserting that many had benefited from his generosity and commitment to public service.
