The initiative, Power Forward, launched alongside the inauguration of a new basketball court at GSS, Wuse, in Abuja, targets at least 300 boys and girls and hopes to make them strive toward development goals according to a curriculum.
The court was renovated to world-class state four years after its initial construction started by Rotary Club, Wuse in 2009.
The Power Forward curriculum “teaches leadership skills and builds health awareness through a combination of classroom and athletic activities” where their progress will be monitored and guided by coaches, said organisers.
The programme was developed by America’s National Basketball Association, Women’s National Basketball Association, nongovernmental group, Africare and ExxonMobil Foundation, in collaboration with local education officials.
At a pre-launch press conference, which featured NBA hall of famer Hakeem Olajuwon and former NBA player Obinna Ekezie, ExxonMobil’s public and government affairs general manager Enyinnaya Onokala, said the foundation backed Power Forward because it was an opportunity to help young people grow and develop their skills.
“Nigeria’s vibrant youth and sports culture makes the country an ideal place to launch this new initiative to equip tomorrow’s leaders with the skills they will need to thrive,” said Amadou Gallo Fall, NBA vice president for development in Africa.
