He said the IOC General Assembly unanimously elected Gumel on Friday.“As I am talking to you now, he (Gumel) is being sworn in along with other elected members,’’ Oladapo said.

NAN reports that Gumel is the third Nigerian after the late Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Adetokunbo Ademola and retired Maj.-Gen. Henry Adefowope to clinch the IOC membership.

Adefowope retired from the IOC in 2007 when he attained the mandatory 80 years.“This is certainly good news to us at the NOC and indeed the Nigerian sports community.

“It is a rare opportunity for Nigeria to have a representative on the IOC board; not all countries have such an opportunity,’’ Oladapo said.

According to him, the development is a demonstration of the fact that the Olympic family has been watching events in Nigeria and is impressed.“Gumel’s membership will benefit Nigeria in so many ways. “He will use his position to get international support for Nigeria, especially in the training of coaches and referees, and scholarship for our athletes,’’ Oladapo said.
