Gunmen suspected to be political thugs on Friday attacked the convoy of a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Amaechi in Rivers State.
The gunmen attacked the convoy of Amaechi between his community, Ubima, and Omuanwa in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The former minister was in his hometown for e-registration as a member of the ADC.
Before Amaechi arrived in his community around 12:15pm on Friday, some suspected thugs had already mounted a roadblock, turning back every bus identified as carrying ADC members attending the visit.
Residents told newsmen that the prompt intervention from security operatives mobilised to the area, restored normalcy and chased the hoodlums away.
Earlier some hoodlums suspected to be political thugs have set ablaze the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
This happened on Thursday night ahead of the visit of a former governor of the state and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi to validate his registration with the party.
The political thugs were also said to have attacked the minister’s community with heavy firepower, shooting sporadically in the area.
Amaechi, who condemned the attack, thanked the security agencies for their prompt intervention.
He said the distraction caused by the attack on the secretariat of Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) and his convoy, will not distract the party from marching to Aso Rock in 2027.
Amaechi charged the security agencies to go after the perpetrators and bring them to book.
Rivers State Police Command is yet to make official statement on the incident, as the spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, is yet to respond to calls and text message sent to her.
