Gunmen have attacked Military Check Point along Bauchi Jos Federal highway killing a soldier and a civilian, leaving another civilian injured.
A security source confirmed the incident.
He said “the attack by the gunmen was a retaliatory attack as security personnel had been chasing the gunmen for sometimes now. Only one soldier, who was a driver, was killed in the attack, while the civilian was caught in the cross fire between soldiers on duty at the checkpoint and the gunmen and another civilian was injured”
He said even on Saturday, security operatives chased the gunmen from one area to the other.
The source, who did not want to be named, said that the Army and their security agencies were on top of the situation, more personnel had been deployed to the area to pursue the fleeing gunmen.
He said the gunmen tried to attacked the check point but they were repelled by the soldiers.
The attack, it was gathered, caused panic on the highway as motorists coming from Bauchi and coming from Jos were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for dear life, while some were said to have made U-turn.
A policeman in Bauchi alleged that the attackers made away with the soldiers’ Toyota Hilux van parked at the checkpoint.
But it could not be confirmed if any of the attackers lost their lives in the exchange of fire with the soldiers.
Jos Bauchi Federal Highway is the major road that links North east to other part of the country.
