Gunmen have reportedly shot and injured a former special assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Electoral Matters, Mr. Mfon Udeme.

It was learnt that Udeme, who had resigned from his job and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was shot at his residence in Itam, Itu Local Government Area by about 15 gunmen.

The assailants were said to have entered his residence on Thursday at about 1:15am, after scaling the fence to gain access into the house.

Udeme, a former chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, was reportedly dragged to a corner of the premises and shot on the right thigh.

He is presently receiving treatment at a private clinic in Uyo.

He said he was at home with his wife and four children when the gunmen broke into his house.

He said the gunmen escaped when they heard gunshots from security personnel around the neighbourhood who responded to their own shots.

“I told the men that I don’t have money in the house, but I had a small amount in the car but they did not show interest in the money but pushed me to one side and shot me,” he said.

Udeme, who said the attack  could have been politically motivated, called on security operatives to come to his aid, adding that he was afraid that some people could be after his life.

When the police spokesman, DSP Odiko MacDon, was contacted for confirmation, he did not pick the calls or respond to the text messages sent to his phone numbers.
