Gunmen have stormed Ukpor, headquarters of Nnewi South Local Government Area and killed two persons.

City & Crime gathered that a security officer and another person were killed during the attack in the early hours of Wednesday.

It was also gathered that the gunmen set Ukpor, headquarters of Nnewi South LGA ablaze.

A resident of the area, who gave her name as Chigozie Nwajiaku, said the attack might be the handwork of the gunmen troubling communities within the South East.

Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, said some staff of the council might have perpetrated the act to cover misappropriations in the local government.

Effort to contact the chairman of Nnewi South LGA was not successful as at the time of filing this report.

Police spokesman in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, said, “A report we received is that there was a case of arson. Unknown fellows set some buildings ablaze at the secretariat complex on fire. Already, men of the fire service have mobilised to the area to put off the fire.

“Police operatives have also been deployed to cordon off the secretariat. People should go about their normal businesses as normalcy has returned to the area.”

He, however, did not confirm any death in connection with the incident.
