Gunmen have reportedly shot dead two herders and injured a vigilante at a Fulani settlement in Mawogi II village in Gawu area of Abaji Area Council in the FCT.
A vigilante from Gawu, Ibrahim Yakubu, said the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday when some gunmen, suspected to be cattle rustlers, invaded an herders’ settlement in the area.
He said the gunmen were at the camp around 1:34 am to rustle cows, adding that two herders, who tried to resist their attempt, were gunned down.
He said the gunshot from the gunmen attracted the attention of the villagers, who called the vigilantes at the neighbouring Gawu village.

According to him, the vigilantes mobilised to the camp to engage the gunmen but one of them sustained bullet injury.
He said the gunmen fled and abandoned the cows after the exchange of fire with the vigilantes, adding that the injured vigilante was taken to the hospital in the neighbouring Lambata community in Niger State.
The Ardon Fulani in Gawu, Malam Dahiru Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to our reporter through telephone.
He said one of the herders died during the crossfire between the vigilantes and the gunmen, while the second victim died on the way to the hospital.
He commended the vigilantes for their braveness to foil the rustling of the cows, even as he said the remains of the two herders had been buried.
Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen came through Mayaki forest, a neighboring community under Lapai LGA of Niger State.
The spokeswoman of the FCT police command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the command was not aware of the incident, promising to enquire from the police division in the area and revert.
