Gunmen kill 2 persons, cattle in Plateau

At least two herders were shot dead and 10 cattle killed when gunmen attacked in Butura district, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Tuesday evening.

The State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, identifying the deceased as Muazzam Aminu and Shapi’iu Abdullahi.

He added that 20 other cattle were injured in the attack.

“The herders were returning from grazing when the gunmen opened fire on them and their cattle. It was a deadly attack because they surrounded both the herders and the animals,” Babayo said.

He said he immediately notified the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, and the State Director of the DSS, who all promised action and urged members not to take the law into their own hands.

Babayo said Sector 5 of OPSH, responsible for peace in the area, visited the scene on Wednesday before the funeral prayers.

Bokkos youth leader Christopher Luka said he was not in town at the time but confirmed being briefed by the commander, adding that the perpetrators remain unknown.

OPSH spokesperson Major Samson Zhakom did not respond to inquiries as of press time.
