A new terrorist group known as Mamudawa has attacked several communities in the Shanga area of Kebbi State, killing four people.

The attacks on the communities were launched on Sunday and Monday in the Gebbe District of Shanga Local Government Area of the state.

The attackers were said to have come from Wawa Forest in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State to carry out the assaults.

A resident, Yisa Ahmed, said some buildings were set ablaze in Kalkami, Tungar Bori, and Kawara communities during the attack.

It was also gathered that the terrorists burnt down Kawara village on Monday.

Shanga Local Government Area has come under persistent attacks by bandits, cattle rustlers, and kidnappers seeking ransom payments in recent times.

Twelve soldiers, including a mobile police officer, were killed by Lakurawa terrorists a few days ago in the area.

A local who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said they were yet to ascertain the exact number of deaths in the attack, but no fewer than four persons were killed by the bandits.

The Vice Chairman of Shanga Local Government Area, Adamu Hamza Gebbe, confirmed the incident to journalists, noting that this was not the first time bandits had attacked the area.

Also, the District Head of Gebbe, Alhaji Haruna Usman, said residents of the affected communities had fled following the attacks.

He said some people are currently taking refuge in Gungu, while others remain in the forests for safety.

Confirming the attack, Kebbi State Police Command said the assault on Gebbe, Kawara, Kalkami, and nearby villages in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State was carried out by the Mamudawa terrorist group.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said, “They took advantage of the wetland terrain. Parts of these communities were set on fire, and lives were tragically lost.”

 

6 kidnapped in Sokoto

In another incident, bandits attacked Gazau village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, abducting six persons during an early morning raid on the community.

According to a relative of the victims who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attackers infiltrated the village at about 1:00 a.m. on Monday.

The source disclosed that a total of 13 persons, including 12 women and one man, were initially abducted after the assailants stormed several homes.

“They later stopped at Dan Adama forest and asked them to identify themselves. They released one person from every two individuals from the same household,” he added.

In the end, the assailants took six persons to their hideout, while seven others were freed.

Those abducted were identified as Asabe Zakariya, Inno Ibrahim, Inno Musa, Umma Yusuf, Safina Abdullahi, and Saminu Jijji.

The source further revealed that the bandits threatened to continue launching daily attacks on the village unless residents sought amnesty from them.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of Isa LGA, Sharehu Abubakar Kamarawa, were unsuccessful as his phone lines were unreachable.

Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, did not respond to calls or text messages as of the time of filing this report.
